About Council Membership

The Council is composed of organizations of national scope and activity which are interested in the development of music and in the purposes for which the National Music Council was formed.

An organization wishing to become a member of the Council may apply to the Staff Director at the Council's national office, giving full information as to its purposes and activities.

Upon the approval of the Board of Directors, the applicant organization will be admitted to membership.

The Council has no individual members; however, individuals associated with member organizations are encouraged to attend the Council's Music Leadership Meetings and Symposia.

The Council's Board of Directors, elected biennially, meets three times a year. Currently, the NMC's Chairman of the Board is Richard Lowenthal and its President is John Mahlmann, Executive Director of Music Educators National Conference. Past Presidents of the Council have included Edwin Hughes, Howard Hanson, Peter Mennin, Goddard Lieberson, Leonard Feist, Merle Montgomery, Gunther Schuller, Victor Fuentealba, Ezra Laderman, Catherine French, and Dean K. Stein.

The Council tracks issues and activities in the music field and answers requests for information from its members and from the general public. It offers member organizations a number of services, including updated mailing lists of music associations, music leadership, and music press; and consultation on questions of membership development, data collection, public relations, executive and board training.
